Last Friday, before Halloween, I was privileged to be given the opportunity to do readings at a Halloween get together. Thinking I would be doing 3-5 readings, I sat down and got my oracle cards out ready to be intuitively available for a few folks. Much to my surprise and almost four hours later, I realized I had done over a dozen readings and people were still waiting in line. It was a moving experience because with every reading I realized that everyone has a challenge and a story which presents to them their own unique opportunity to grow.
So many people are searching for solutions to life’s challenges these days and are feeling disconnected from themselves. As the evening progressed, I realized that a common thread emerged in my counsel that night to help people get back in touch with themselves and hence, help them find their own solutions to their challenges.
That thread was embracing creativity.
In many of the readings I did, people had noted that they loved painting, pottery, photography and other forms of being creative. The problem was that they were too busy to engage in the activities which brought them so much joy. “Life” had gotten in the way and they missed that part of themselves. But, what could they do? There were bills to pay, kids to cart around, and jobs to go to. When was there time to engage in anything creative? Painting a pretty picture or molding a vase wasn’t going to get their to-do list done.
This made me a little sad because engaging in something creative gives one the chance to really get in touch with one’s true essence…the soul. Creative projects are the soul’s way of expressing. I have to ask…How can you NOT engage in your favorite creative activity? How can you not be in touch with YOU? Being creative is a lifeline to your soul…a way to reconnect to yourself and others. It engages the right brain…the side of the brain that the thinking, rational, strategic side of our society, the left brain, has dimmed down. The left brain has taken control of our modern day society and is praised in our schools and at work. Our right brain has been left to ask…What about me?
The truth is we need both sides of our brain to function fully and congruently in life. Now, more than ever, it will be the creative right brain which will give us solutions to the world’s increasing challenges. The right brain controls our creativity, our feelings, our empathy and our intuition. There are answers there waiting to be heard if only we would listen.
Steve Jobs is an incredible example of how to work with these two dueling hemispheres of our brain. On one hand he embraced the logistical, technological side of himself (the left brain) and brought us innovative ways to communicate. However, he also allowed the intuitive, creative side of himself, the part which embraces beauty and meaning (the right brain) to have a say in every project he put out.
There are some great books out there if you wish to gain some more insight into how the right brain works and how to reacquaint yourself with it…
One is “A Whole New Mind” by Daniel Pink. This will appeal to your left brain, that part of you that wants to know why. It explains why developing the right brain will be critical in our society’s ability to move forward into the future. Check out this link to learn more…http://www.danpink.com/whole-new-mind
Another wonderful book is “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. This will appeal to your right brain. It’s about reengaging in creative projects as a means of connecting to oneself spiritually and contains exercises and techniques to help you do so. So, ask yourself, what have I done lately to embrace my creative side? Ask yourself whether you have abandoned your creative side. I would encourage you to think about some ways you can get reacquainted with that wonderful , insightful side of YOU, the right brain. Think about how you can carve out 30 minutes to an hour a week doing something creative and then do it. Bake, knit, paint, dance, write, sing…whatever floats your boat. I think you might find that solutions and ease come into your life much more readily and easily.
